Magic sets for beginners

Boxed kits teach dozens to hundreds of tricks step by step, and many include video lessons. You'll find Marvin's Magic sets (from the 225-trick kids' set to the Signature Deluxe Box of Tricks), Magic Makers kits, the Thames & Kosmos Magic Hat, Jim Stott's Street Magic kit and beginner sets from PATIFEED and others.

Individual tricks and props

  • Card magic: card trick kits with trick decks, Svengali decks and throwing cards.
  • Coin magic: Marvin's Magic Dynamic Coins, double-sided coins, coin slides and coin cases.
  • Close-up and stage props: colour-changing silks, sponge balls, light-up thumb tips, invisible thread and Yigal Mesika's Loops, a folding top hat and stick-to-flower wands.

Most items cost between about £22 and £63, and the typical price is around £31.

For more surprises, see Novelty & Gag Toys, or Family Card Games for a deck to practise with.

Frequently asked questions

What age are magic sets for?

Most beginner kits are labelled 6+ or 8+, and the more advanced Marvin's Magic and Magic Makers sets suit older children, teens and adults. The age is on each listing.

Do the kits explain how to do the tricks?

Yes. Boxed sets come with an instruction booklet, and many also include online video tutorials that show each trick being performed and explained.

Which trick is easiest to start with?

Card tricks with a special trick deck and simple coin vanishes are good first tricks, as the props do much of the work. Invisible thread and sleight-of-hand tricks take more practice.
